Install Oracle (Sun) Java JRE on Ubuntu 10.04

Post by geohei »

Ubuntu 10,04 doesn't include Sun java anymore. However some packages do require this particular java package to be installed.

This explains what to do.
Oracle (Sun) Java JRE

Alternatively, Ubuntu can install Sun Java directly using Ubuntu features.

System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager
Settings > Repositories > Other software
Enable : http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu lucid partner

Search for sun-java6-bin. This installs sun-java6-bin, sun-java6-jre, and some other packages required.

Next, use these two commands to make Ubuntu aware that Sun Java is installed and used:

Code: Select all

$> sudo update-alternatives --install "/usr/bin/java" "java" "/opt/java/32/jre1.6.0_23/bin/java" 1
$> sudo update-alternatives --set java /opt/java/32/jre1.6.0_23/bin/java
